Ponies Can't Hold On Against Benton
Early on in the game against Pecatonica on January 31st, the Ponies held a 2-point lead, but Pec went on a 24-6 run, followed by another run of 16-5 to finish the half. The Ponies trailed by 26 at the half.
The Ponies never got closer than 26 points in the second half, and were outscored 27-22 by the Vikings.
“We knew going in we had to work hard to contain AJ Hendrickson, who went over 2,000 points for his career on Friday,” said Coach Mark Olson. “We did a decent job against him, but too many turnovers led to easy baskets for them and we weren’t able to stay in the game.”
Jon Errthum led the Ponies with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Reece Rufer put 6 points on the board and pulled down 10 rebounds and Braden Gafner scored 6 points.
In the Six Rivers Crossover game that was held on Friday night, the Ponies hosted Benton.
The game was close throughout the entire first half. After six ties and thirteen lead changes, Benton went on a 9-2 run to end the half.
During the second half, the Ponies were outmatched and could only get within four points. Benton won the game, 54-46.
“The boys worked really hard on defense and on the offensive glass,” said Olson. “We couldn’t get enough shots to drop.”
Leading the Ponies was Jon Errthum, who scored 15 points and pulled down 18 rebounds. Zach Price scored 9 points, Trenten Ryan put 8 points on the board and Reece Rufer scored 7 points and had six rebounds. Braden Gafner ended the game with five rebounds.
On February 6th the Ponies hosted Orfordville Parkview and on February 9th they will play Barneveld at home. That game starts at 7:30 p.m.
