Youth Fahnenschwingen Class To Be Offered Through Swiss Center of North America

The Swiss Center of North America will be sponsoring another youth flag throwing class this spring

Flag tossing, or flag throwing, in Switzerland involves swinging a flag of a prescribed size and shape back and forth on a short staff and then throwing it into the air and catching it by the staff as it comes down. In the Middle Ages, this skillful activity was a privilege of urban guilds. It was brought back to Switzerland by Swiss mercenaries who had been serving in foreign European armies.  Since 1914, flag tossing has been a discipline promoted by the Swiss Yodeling Association and has around 50 different sanctioned throws. Flag throwing has a long-standing tradition in New Glarus and this class passes it onto to the next generation of flag throwers.

The class will be eight sessions, from March 6th through May 1st, and will meet Monday evenings from 6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m., at the New Glarus Middle School MPR room. The class is open to youth from Green County that are between 13 and 18 years of age. The flag and staff will be provided for each student. If you have a child that would be interested in participating in the class, please contact Damion Babler at (608) 862-3306.
