School District of Belleville Post-Referendum Update

The School District of Belleville is grateful for the support of the community in the passing of the Referendum this past November. Plans to move forward are now underway and the district is committed to keeping the community, parents, students and staff updated and involved in the process. Community chats will be held in the coming months and are intended to provide information as well as provide an opportunity for community members to ask questions and give feedback.

The passing of the referendum is exciting and the school district is looking forward to seeing construction begin. However, there are many behind the scenes projects that must be completed before actual “shovel in the ground” construction starts, such as design development and construction scope and sequence.

One of the first steps in the process is to survey the school district’s land. The district took proposals from local Surveyors and the land has been surveyed. A thorough survey provides our construction and architect firms the information they need to make construction plans. At the same time the planning and design phase of the project is also underway. The design phase includes things such as: touring other schools to see design possibilities and comparing them to Belleville’s needs, gathering design information, options and recommendations, matching district needs to a design that will meet Belleville’s teaching and learning now and in the future, and design decision making.

Several committees have also been formed to guide decision making about the building project. The Steering Committee makes decisions and compiles information from the community and staff and uses it to make recommendations to the School Board for final approvals. This group is made-up of district staff, administration, school board members, Bray Architects and Findorff Construction representatives. Two building committees also meet regularly, the Middle/High School Building Committee and the Elementary/Intermediate School Building Committee. These committees represent staff from each Belleville school and provide recommendations to the Steering Committee about the needs and desires of their building, staff, students, parents and community.

As progress continues the school district is committed to keeping the community informed.
