Seven individuals representing New Glarus High School and the community attended the 2016 Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association/Rural Mutual Insurance Sportsmanship Summit in Stevens Point, WI, on December 7th.
One hundred and one teams from 91 high schools throughout Wisconsin, representing all divisions were in attendance at the Summit held at the Holiday Inn and Convention Center. Each school was represented by a team or teams of students, school administrators, coaches, school board members and/or community leaders.
The mission of the Sportsmanship Summit was to strengthen the principles of sportsmanship by promoting teamwork through networking and the sharing of resources, and instilling the motivation to make a difference.
The Summit featured two keynote addresses and three time slots for five different break-out sessions, which focused on the ideals of sportsmanship/citizenship. The morning keynote address was presented by Craig Hiller, professional speaker and author of the book Playing Beyond the Scoreboard. The afternoon keynote address was given by Ross Bernstein, best-selling author and professional speaker.
Participants also attended three morning break-out sessions. The subjects for the five, 40-minute break-out presentations available during the three time slots were "The Coach and Participant's Role in Sportsmanship" by Steve Jones, football coach at Kimberly; "School Sportsmanship Expectations" by Nick Senger and Jeremy Martin of the WIAA Sportsmanship Committee; "Sportsmanship: The Official's Prospective" by Jeff Dorschner, veteran WIAA licensed official; "Responsible and Respectful Social Media" by David Petroff, Sports Information Director at Edgewood College; and "Sportsmanship Roundtable Discussions" moderated by Shane Been and Todd Fischer of the WIAA Sportsmanship Committee.
Together, schools, parents, booster clubs and communities can establish standards and expectations regarding good sportsmanship. Sportsmanship and good citizenship are the responsibility of everyone.
