Green County Herdsmanship Awards
The 2016 Herdsmanship contest recently took place at the Green County Fair. Herdsmanship is an event at the fair when the exhibitors get the opportunity to be the judges. They have the chance to score the other clubs/chapters in their species based on the preparation of the exhibit, appearance and attitude of the exhibitors, and the care of the exhibit. It encourages the exhibitors to work as a club or chapter in order to maintain a clean exhibit and share their knowledge on their project with fair-goers. Projects that participate in Herdsmanship include beef, large herd dairy, small herd dairy, goats, rabbits, sheep, and swine.
Last year Rock Valley Veterinary Medical Association kindly donated a plaque that will display the winner for each species for 10 years and will sponsor the addition of every 1st place club or chapter every year. This plaque is displayed in the Youth in Action Building during the Green County Fair and stays in the Fair Office for the rest of the year.
This year’s top two clubs and chapters were: Beef – 1st Place: Next Generation, 2nd Place: Clarence Bridge Pioneers; Dairy Small Herd – 1st Place: Spring Grove Honest Workers, 2nd Place: Clarno; Dairy Large Herd – 1st Place: Clarence Bridge Pioneers, 2nd Place: New Glarus 4-H; Goats – 1st Place: Washington Center, 2nd Place: Spring Grove Honest Workers; Rabbit – 1st Place: Cheese Country Clovers, 2nd Place: Spring Grove Honest Workers; Sheep – 1st Place: Clarno, 2nd Place: Dayton Dairylanders; and Swine – 1st Place: Next Generation, 2nd Place: Washington Center.
The clubs/chapters with the top two scores win a monetary prize. The clubs with 75 out of 100 points received an ice cream coupon.
