This note should not embarrass the largemouth bass by revealing that it is scientifically a member of the sunfish family.  Other sunfish members include bluegills, pumpkinseeds and green sunfish.

After being misled by a lure, the bass leaps from the water rather than fighting below the surface.

Even non-anglers are familiar with largemouth bass, the fish that is immortalized as a mailbox or the talking wall fish.  All of this comes from the gaping mouth that extends back past the eye location on the fish’s side, as opposed to the smallmouth bass, which does not have this extreme frontal opening.

A lover of Mississippi River backwaters, clear aqua conditions, and sandy shorelines, the king bass fancies abundant summer weedy vegetation.

While a relatively slow-grower in Wisconsin, when in Georgia this bass reaches world record weights up to 22 pounds.  In Wisconsin the record in 11 pounds; Minnesota’s record is 9 pounds.
