Lady Wildcats Lose to Orioles
Belleville’s softball team played at Argyle on April 4th. The Wildcats ended up losing to the Orioles, 14-4 in five innings.
Pitching all five innings for the Wildcats was sophomore Cassidy Heller. Heller faced 30 batters, struck out six, walked one and gave up 15 hits. “A lot of those hits came on first pitches, so we’re going to have to work on ball placement,” stated Coach Connie Wunschel. Four of Heller’s strikeouts were to the first two batters.
“Started off with a bang and dried up from there,” said Wunschel.
In the first inning, the Wildcats scored two runs, a lead off triple by Cassidy Heller, followed by an RBI double from Alli Kowalski. Tara Hanna drove Kowalski in with an RBI double.
The Orioles scored once in the 2nd inning and three times in the 3rd to go ahead, 4-2.
The Wildcats started the 4th inning off by making an error on the first batter, followed by three hits, including a triple. The Orioles scored nine runs in the 4th inning.
“We tied it in the top of the 4th, starting with an error on Bailey Legler’s hit, a ground out to move her to 2nd, a walk to Grace Patrow, then a sacrifice bunt by Leah Hanna to move both runners. On two outs, Cassidy hit a base shot to left to score Bailey and move Grace to 3rd and Allie had her 2nd hit to drive in Grace. We managed two more hits in the 5th, but we couldn’t push them around,” said Wunschel.
Cassidy Heller was two for three, with one run scored, one RBI and one triple. Alli Kowalski was two for three, with one run scored, two RBIs and one double. Tara Hanna was three for three, with one RBI and one double.
Belleville’s next two softball games were cancelled due to the weather. On April 12th, they headed to Wisconsin Heights, and will play New Glarus at home on April 14th.
