Sugar River Soccer Looks To Continue A Winning Tradition

With expectations high for the season, the Raiders started competition with a strong showing in a scrimmage with Platteville and a win over Evansville. The Belleville/New Glarus co-op team won the Capital Conference Title in 2015 and 2014, and are led by Coach John Ziperski, an experienced coach with a strong history of success. Returning the majority of starting players from last season and adding some talented new players should give the Raiders momentum as they begin their season.

The annual pre-season scrimmage with Platteville did not keep an official score, but that did not stop the Raiders from capitalizing and putting the ball in the net with their high scoring offense. An unrelenting and aggressive Raider defense shutout Platteville and only allowed one shot on goal. The scrimmage allowed the Raiders to learn about themselves as individuals and as a team and prepare for the season ahead.

In the first official game of the season, the Raiders hosted the Evansville Blue Devils. Evansville posted the first score of the night on a well-executed penalty kick. Loyal fans in winter coats and huddled under blankets soon had something to cheer about. The Raiders answered when freshman midfielder Sydney Gentilli knocked in the opening goal of the season. Senior forwards Vanessa Narveson and Brooke Larson each added a goal for the Raiders. Final: Raiders 3, Evansville 1. In JV action, the Raiders defeated Evansville by a score of 4 to 0.

Next up for the Raiders is a Conference game on Thursday, April 7th, in Lodi. The Raider Quad will be held on Saturday, April 9th, with the Varsity team playing in Belleville with games at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., and the JV Team playing in New Glarus with games at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.
