Belleville's Bryce Neild (5) and Nick Pauli (14) play defense against Cambridge's Gus Kaiser on Friday Night.
Belleville played hosts Marshall on February 9th. The score at half-time was Belleville 17, Marshall 47.
"We take our hats off to Marshall. They played extremely well and, aside from that, they shot the basketball very effectively. Offensively for us, they were able to take us out of our offense pretty much from the opening tip. Their size and quickness really gave us problems. I thought we played hard for the most part but they are a team and a program that's ahead of us right now. It's as simple as that," said Coach Jarod Wichser.
The final score of the game was Marshall 87, Belleville 34.
Drew Shrader was the only scorer for Belleville in the double digits, with 14 points. Kevin Zimmerman scored 8 points and Brock Kelly scored 6 points.
Marshall's Brandon Neuberger scored 25 points for the night. Jordon Gomez put 18 on the board and Adam Wehking scored 13 points.
On February 12th, the Wildcats hosted Cambridge. "This was a game against a well-coached Cambridge team that we really felt we could compete with, and still do. We trailed early on 7-0, but our guys did a great job of rallying and we actually took a 17-15 lead mid-way through the first half. At that point, we had a couple of key guys get into foul trouble and when you combine that with three straight turnovers, good things aren't going to happen," said Wichser.
The half-time score was Cambridge 33, Belleville 21.
Wichser continued, "I thought our boys never stopped competing and we truly had a number of opportunities that we just weren't able to capitalize on. Despite how the final score might look, I felt that we were two consecutive plays away from climbing right back into things but we weren't able to make those plays or get those stops."
Cambridge took the win, 66-44.
Drew Shrader poured in 15 points as the leading scorer for the Wildcats. Brock Kelly added 9 and Daniel Meier scored 7 points.
Jacob Horton led Cambridge with 17 points. Brenden Jarlsberg scored 12 points and J.T. Parish and Matt Kaare each had 9 points.
The Wildcats play their next two on the road. They faced Albany on February 16th and head to Wisconsin Heights on February 18th.
