Letter to the Editor
Dear Green County Voting Public,
If you are upset with after effects of the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizen’s United vs. Federal Elections Commission (2010) and related case law allowing unlimited political campaign spending to influence local, state and federal elections your help is needed to let individuals’ voices be heard again in elections.
Wisconsin provisions of Section 9.20 of the Wisconsin Statues permit direct legislation action by state and federal legislature to overturn the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision in 2010, or preferably place the resolution by democratic process before the voting public on the ballot on April 5th, 2016. It begins at the city and village level. Please join with the Green County to Amend Committee, which is made up of your friends and neighbors, who want to get our voices back in the elections. Your attendance at the Monticello December 16th Village Board meeting is essential, as it will let them know how important it is to add this referendum resolution to the April ballot.
Sixty municipalities, representing over 42% of Wisconsin citizens, have already passed a resolution asking the state legislature to act. The state legislature has failed for three years to act on bills to initiate a state-wide referendum. This is why it is now being left up to local governments to hold individual referendums. If passed this would be a huge statement to our Federal legislators to pass an Amendment to the U.S, Constitution, which would state, in part:
1. Only human beings – not corporations, unions, non-profits or similar associations are endowed with constitutional rights, and
2. Money is not speech, and therefore, regulating political contributions is not equivalent to limiting political speech.
If you would like to reclaim a voice and end the big PAC influence in elections, please join the Green County/Monticello efforts. The more public voice given to this, the better the chance of it getting on the ballot in April. There was a meeting December 9th at 203 Main Street, Monticello (next to the Dining Room) at 6:30 p.m., to learn more and join in. Your presence at the December 16th Village Board Meeting is essential. The Village Board meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. You will be joining grass roots efforts of communities across the country in support of the passage of an Amendment to the United States Constitution.
If this referendum is not put on the ballot in April it will be much more costly and difficult to get it on the November ballot. Please make time on your calendar to attend the Monticello Village Board meeting December 16th at 7:00 p.m.
Once there is a commitment to hold a referendum, Green County United to Amend will help with community education by holding documentary screenings and open forums in northern Green County.
