Four members of the Monroe Swiss Singers were recognized: (left to right) Fr. Michael E. Klarer, who served as a Navy Chaplain from 1989-2002 during Desert Storm; Vicki Sasso; Steve Streiff, who served in Vietnam in the Army from 1966-1969; Heinz Mattmann, who served in Viet Nam in the Army from 1967-1969, and then in Desert Storm while in the reserves from 1980-1991; and Paul Beach, who was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War while in the Army from 1970-1973.
On Sunday, November 1, at the Monroe Swiss Singers' 49th Annual Swissfest at the Turner Hall of Monroe, a special presentation was made by Vicki Sasso of Madison from the Quilts of Valor Foundation. The national non-profit organization awards handmade quilts to comfort and honor military veterans who have been touched by war. The red, white and blue quilts presented to each of the four men were made by local quilters from St. John's United Church of Christ in Monroe and the Monroe Courthaus Quilters.
