NG-M Football Falls to Spencer/Columbus Catholic
In the first round of the playoffs, the New Glarus-Monticello football team lost to Spencer/Columbus Catholic, 54-8.
“The game against Spencer/Columbus Catholic was a tough one. They are probably the best team we’ve faced in the playoffs in the last 10 years. They were fast, tackled well, and were explosive on offense. I was proud of the team because they never quit trying and left everything out on the field,” said Head Coach Desie Breadon. “I told them after the game that if you give everything you have and the other team wins there is nothing more you could do and to keep their heads up. Defensively we did a good job shutting down their best offensive player, Hunter Luepke. Luepke was averaging almost 100 yards a game and 10 yards a carry, and we held him to 38 yards. SCC made some offensive adjustments because of that and caught us with a couple of big plays, mostly on counters. SCC did a good job of taking away some of our best weapons and plays, because of their speed and quickness. We give them a ton of respect; they were a first class team in every aspect.”
The Knights’ only scoring play came in the third quarter on a 46-yard carry by Trey Taylor. Gavin Binger then had a two point conversion run.
Binger was the leading passer, going two for nine for 17 yards with one interception.
The leading rusher was Taylor with nine carries for 74 yards and one touchdown, while Binger had 10 carries for 58 yards. Additionally, Zach Price had seven carries for 20 yards.
Cullen Brooks led the way in receiving with one catch for 12 yards.
“The season as a whole was tough because of all the injuries and illness we had to contend with, but the silver lining was that it gave a lot of younger guys opportunities and experience for the future. If you judged this season purely on wins and losses, some people would say that it was not successful. We have never judged the success of our season on wins and losses or titles. The success of a season is reflected years down the road by the men that are produced. That has always been our number one goal, and by looking at the men that will come out of this season, I think it will be as successful as any we have had,” Breadon explained.
