Charles Garrison Workman, New Glarus, died peacefully on Wednesday, October 7, 2015, at the age of 99 years. Charlie was born on August 10, 1916, in Chicago, IL, the son of Edward William and Lena (Ehle) Workman.
He graduated from the University of Texas in 1936 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology. He taught school in Benavides, Texas, before attending Union Theological Seminary in New York City, graduating in 1942 with a Bachelor of Divinity. He started the First Larger Parish in west Texas. Charlie served as University Chaplain for First Presbyterian Church in College Station, Texas, and held the same position for Collegiate Presbyterian Church in Ames, Iowa. He also served as director of CROP-CWS in Wisconsin. He was the Pastor at Zwingli United Church of Christ in Monticello for 14 years. Following his retirement, he helped build 32 homes for Habitat for Humanity and did volunteer ministry at hospitals and nursing homes. He married Kathleen Worley on August 26, 1939, in Austin, TX. She preceded him in death on April 27, 2003. Charlie and Marilyn Freitag were married on September 21, 2003. Charles was a member of the New Glarus Lions Club and was an avid sportsman, especially enjoying golf and tennis.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Workman of Monroe; two daughters, Kathleen (Richard) Arthur of Dallas, TX, and Marilyn (Jim) DeKoster of Waterloo, Iowa; two sons, Edward Workman of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Bruce (Kathy) Workman of Monticello; 14 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2015, at 2:00 p.m., at the Zwingli United Church of Christ, Monticello, with Pastor Mary Gafner and Petra Streiff officiating. Private burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Monticello. The family will greet friends following the service in Zwingli's Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Green County Habitat for Humanity or the charity of one's choice.
The Voegeli-Newcomer Funeral Home, Monticello, is assisting the family.
