Lila Dibble

Lila (Kubly) Dibble, age 96, passed away on Friday, July 3, 2015. Born on July 29, 1918, on the family farm in New Glarus to Nic and Alda Kubly, she enjoyed helping her father in the fields more than her mother in the house.

Lila graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Madison, with a degree in social work and then attended graduate school at the University of Chicago. While at the University of Wisconsin, she met Robert (Bob) Dibble whom she married on December 27, 1942. They began their life together during World War II, while Bob was an officer in the Army Air Corps. After the war they settled on the family farm in New Glarus, where their daughters, Bonnie, Wendy and Mary, were born. Five years later the family moved to Racine where their son, Nic, was born and Lila resumed her social work career.

Lila had a life-long commitment to helping others in both her professional and personal lives. She was active in her church throughout her life and shared her resources with local, national, and international causes. While raising their four children, they hosted many students and missionaries from other countries. Later in life they began three decades of adventuresome travel to places like Nepal, Machu Picchu, the Amazon River, Kenya, China, Korea, England, and Switzerland. Lila had a special love for the British Isles, where she made life-long friends. She enthusiastically watched the Badgers, Packers and the Kentucky Derby. Proud of her Swiss heritage, Lila retired with Bob in New Glarus after building a home high on a ridge where she could look down over “her” valley. They were blessed with wonderful friendships that they cherished throughout their lives.

Lila is survived by her four children, Bonnie (James) Geyer of Fort Atkinson, Wendy (Stephen) Tupper of Milton, Mary Dibble of New Glarus, and Nic (Mary) Dibble of Stoughton. She is further survived by six grandchildren, Nate and Aaron Hutchins, Adam and Seth Tupper, Eve Christoffersen, and Andy Dibble; eight great-grandchildren; and her sister-in-law, Lee Kubly.

Lila was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; and her brother, Herb (Nic) Kubly.

Warm, funny, genuine, smart, and strong, Lila enjoyed dancing with Bob and we now celebrate the beginning of their dance together through eternity.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to World Neighbors or the University of Wisconsin Robert and Lila Dibble Scholarship.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, July 17, 2015, at the Swiss United Church of Christ, 18 Fifth Avenue, New Glarus, WI, with the Rev. William Wineke officiating.

Relatives and friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the Swiss United Church of Christ in New Glarus.
