The Sugar River girls soccer team faced off against Platteville, Lake Mills, and Monroe last week; they won all three games to stay undefeated in conference play. Junior defender Abbi Lahey (22) looks to move downfield with the ball.
With the chill of winter continuing into the soccer season, the Raiders Soccer Team gave their fans the opportunity to stay warm with excitement and cheering as the team displayed tremendous ability and thrilling play. Leading the Capital Conference with nine wins and one loss, and staying undefeated in conference, the Raiders continue to play well on both sides of the ball. Vanessa Narveson leads the team and the conference in goals scored with 10.
On April 20th, the Raiders traveled to Platteville. Senior Captain Kendell Goecke set the tone for the Raiders by scoring four goals in 10 minutes. Hannah Donlin, Brooke Larson, Ja-ae Borth and Mikayla Cann each added a goal for the Raiders while Vanessa Narveson added two additional goals. The game was called in the 71 minute due to the Mercy rule. Final: Sugar River 10, Platteville 0.
April 21st found the Raiders traveling to Lake Mills to take on Capital Conference opponent Lake Mills. Junior forward Brooke Larson scored two goals for the Raiders, with Nicole Sanders and Vanessa Narveson each adding a goal. The Raider defense shut down Lake Mills for majority of the game but conceded one goal late in the second half.
Raiders Head Coach John Ziperski stated, "I was proud of the performance vs the L-Cats. With a couple of players out, our girls were able to step up and establish a solid base defensively with some success on the offensive side of the field. We had some great efforts from our bench while platooning to fill a gap in our midfield and giving us a look at players that were new to some positions." Final: Raiders 4, Lake Mills 1.
On April 23rd, the Raiders hosted Monroe in Belleville. The Raiders came out strong, playing with energy and moving the ball down the field with precise passing and control of the game. The Raiders offense pressured Monroe by continually attacking the goal while the defense challenged and won any offensive attempts by the Cheesemakers. Scoring for the Raiders were Abbi Lahey, Aimee Sies, and Vanessa Narveson.
The defense recorded their sixth shutout of the season. Coach Ziperski: "Being a long-standing Green County grudge match, I thought both sides displayed good sportsmanship and respect for each other. Being able to put on display the tenacity up top, as well as shut-down defense that I believe ranks with one of the best defenses I have been fortunate to coach, led to a pretty dominant performance by our team. Our midfield was great at possessing the run of play and connecting our back group consistently with our front group. Having a new option up from our JV team (Aimee Sies) on corners has made us even more dangerous than previous matches. I was happy to see her confidence and production make a difference in the game." Final: Sugar River 3, Monroe 0.
