Natalie Roe, left, and MacKenzie Errthum, right, both of Monticello, with their top placing posters educating on pollinators.
The Green County Land and Water Conservation Department held a poster contest with the theme of "Local Heroes – Your Hardworking Pollinators." The contest was created by the National Association of Conservation Districts, which gives the guidelines and theme. It was open to all students from Kindergarten through twelfth grade to participate.
Posters were received in three divisions. First place in grades 2 – 3 was Kalena Riemer, a homeschool student from rural Brodhead. First place in grades 4 – 6 was MacKenzie Errthum of Monticello. Second place went to Eliana Riemer, a homeschool student from rural Brodhead. And Natalie Roe of Monticello received third place. First place in grades 10 – 12 was Megan Weaver-Pollansky of Juda. Robyn Wahl, also of Juda, placed second. The Green County Land and Water Conservation Department awarded monetary prizes to these top three winners.
The top poster in each division was sent on for judging in the area contest, which is comprised of eleven counties in Southern Wisconsin. Kalena Riemer and Megan Weave-Pollansky each received first place in their division at the area contest.
Kalena and Megan's posters were sent on for judging in the statewide contest. Kalena Riemer received third place at the state level in the 2-3 grade category.
The contest is held every year. This is the first year back from a long absence that Green County has participated. The Land and Water Conservation Department has prioritized youth education as something that needs more time devoted to it.
