Honoring Veterans in Monticello

November 15, 2018

Sue Moen

Monticello School District held their Veterans Day Program on Thursday, November 8, 2018.

On Sunday, November 11, 2018 the Monticello Area Historical Society worked at teaching people about the end of World War I, one hundred years ago.

According to the 1918 local paper, chimes rang at the church, the fire bell rang, and steam whistles were blown. All three were used in the MAHS presentation with the steam whistle located in front of the museum, provided by Jim Faith. Inside the museum there were photographs of local soldiers taken 100 years ago. Also included in the display were newspaper clippings of letters written home from the front.

Doughnuts and coffee were served just like the Salvation Army did at the front for the soldiers. The doughnuts were donated by Gempeler's Supermarket and the Morning Mug provided the coffee.
