Sixth graders from New Glarus recently returned from their trip to Wyalusing. This is the 54th year that New Glarus has taken a group to Wyalusing.
New Glarus sixth graders, along with chaperones and staff, made their 54th annual trip to Wyalusing during the second week of May.
Before getting to Wyalusing State Park, the group stopped at Stonefield Village in Cassville to enjoy country school lessons first hand, learn about how the science of agriculture has progressed steadily since the first settlers, participate in a friendly butter making competition, tour a turn-of-the-century farmhouse, and enjoy a delicious ice cream cone!
While at Wyalusing State Park, we enjoyed a variety of experiences including bird watching, hiking, and learning about the history of the area and the Native American peoples who lived there. All campers had the chance to use an atlatl ("new" advanced technology circa 3000 BCE) to throw a spear; several of us with awesome results!
Following our journey to Wyalusing State Park, we stopped at Bethel Horizons to learn about Wisconsin's wonderful plants and animals. We were amazed at the variety of birds we saw there, including Indigo Buntings! Several of us held snakes, turtles, even a Tarantula (not a Wisconsin native).
We are grateful to the New Glarus Community Fund, The Excellence in Education Fund, the New Glarus Brewery, our New Glarus PTO and ALL of our families for helping finance portions of our journey. Thank you to all of these fine community groups for continuing to support such a wonderful educational trip! We have learned valuable lessons, and have experienced memories to last a lifetime.
