Town of New Glarus to Present 'Trees and Bees' Workshop

The Town of New Glarus Parks Commission presents their spring workshop "Trees and Bees" on Wednesday, April 22, starting at 7:00 p.m. They will be holding this event at the Town Hall at 1101 Hwy 69, in the Swiss Miss Center. The Town of New Glarus Parks Commission is sponsoring this workshop as part of their ongoing educational series regarding our rural character. The workshop is open to anyone interested in learning more about native tree species and beekeeping. The Commission will also be presenting information regarding projects being undertaken and planned in the town.

Join our members for two half hour presentations starting at 7:00 p.m., there will be a question and answer time following each talk. Cory Secher, DNR Forrester, will present information on the planting, care and diseases of the tree species chosen for this year's Tree Sales program. This year's tree types included Sugar Maple, White Pine, Burr Oak, Quaking Aspen, Tamarack and Shagbark Hickory. The commission will also announce the Tree Sales date for those people picking up pre-ordered trees and customers wishing to purchase day of sale trees. There will be a limited number of trees available for purchase on the day of sale on a first come first serve basis.

Dr. Bob Beck and Pat Holmstrom will present "Honey 101" bee keeping and honey production. Dr. Beck will introduce Tbar hives, a simpler form of hive that allows for easier honey extraction. There will also be information on construction of these hives. Holmstrom will cover the standard type of hives, construction and honey extraction.

Refreshments will be provided and the commission members hope to see their fellow town residents and get to know each other a little more.

The commission would like to build its membership in 2015.
