New Glarus native DJ Schuett has recently been named the new Head Coach for the New Glarus-Monticello football team. Schuett is shown here with his family. From left: Declan, DJ, Drew, Kate and Darris.

On January 24, 2022, the NGHS school board approved and appointed Douglas James Schuett (aka "DJ") as their 13th Head Football Coach*. He takes over the reins from Dr. Jeff Eichelkraut, who resigned last October after 19 years at the helm.

In all ways this has the makings of a perfectly "seamless" hire. DJ Schuett was raised in New Glarus, graduating high school in 1992 where he was a lineman playing alongside the newly retired Jeff Eichelkraut. He served as Assistant Head Coach to Eichelkraut the past four years, coached Youth Football for 10+years, and knows the kids, the culture, the history and the program inside and out. All staff are returning from last year which should further make the transition as seamless as the hem on a new bride's wedding dress.

Schuett is believed to be the first non-teacher to lead the football program in New Glarus. During the day he is employed by Midwest Title, where he is active in real estate closings and title insurance concerns. He lives in New Glarus with his wife, Kate, and their three football-playing sons - Darris, Drew, and Declan. Can you say "Football Family"? In an interview he mentioned that Kate is, "growing to love the game."

His coaching style is one that will emphasize technique, fundamentals, and effort...all the while with an eye on teaching life lessons. One of the immediate challenges he sees is getting more Monticello boys to buy into the program. To that end, he is making the necessary overtures to boys and their parents in Monticello.

When asked about his offensive preferences and schemes, he suddenly became tight-lipped, preferring to hold his cards close to the vest (and keep all competitors guessing). I guess we'll just have to wait and see, but not for long as the season, and the beginning of The Schuett Era, opens August 19th with an away game at Clinton. NGM returns home the following week, August 26, to resume their rivalry game with Belleville. The Knights will resume playing in the Capitol Conference, with a new edition in Edgewood High School being added for 2022. (Edgewood will play in New Glarus on September 9). A full schedule will appear at a later date.

Best of luck and congratulations to DJ Schuett as he now takes over the storied NGM football program.
