No One Yells 'Fore' Anymore

What happened to Brodhead's Decatur Lakes Golf Course? The first six holes opened in 1926, and over the years expanded to a full eighteen and a club house which became a favorite of graduation parties and class reunions. Unfortunately, this local gem struggled and folded. A community group purchased nine holes to turn into a nature preserve and establish large prairie plots. A private couple purchased the other nine with the idea of allowing weddings and community activities. This now includes a 5 kilometer (3.1 mile) cross country course winding back and forth among the former fairways and greens.
On Tuesday, the New Glarus-Monticello Girls CC runners lined-up with Beloit Turner, Brodhead-Juda, Jefferson and Wisconsin Heights on this new course. Sixty seconds after the gun fired they cleared the first hill and disappeared from sight. Following them to the high ground we witnessed Brodhead's Madelynn McIntyre take an early lead, with Heights' Samantha Herring running in second. At mile one the race jelled with six of the next seven places occupied by the royal blue uniforms of NGM. Lily Maynard (22:15), Dayna Karls (22:34), Melanie Fink (22:52), Tenley Faber (23:37), Annika Ziperski (23:39) and Emma Martinson (23:41) finished before a second runner from any other school even glimpsed the finish line. Lucy Melvin (28:37), Ruth Marty (29:02) and Devi Duerst completed our team. The ladies 23 points earned them a third victory in the third race of the season.
A few minutes later the boys took off to test their meddle on this 80 degree day. As is his trademark, Joe Quaglia (18:22) charged out in front. By the first mile, Joe succumbed to Evan Guenther's (17:38) relentless pace. Tom Nelson (17:47) kept his teammate in sight, with Brayden Ryan (18:04) and Braylon Hoesly (18:11) not far behind. Every other runner appeared to be an NGM'er with Ty Ready (18:58), Conor McCoy (19:31), Linden Lounsbury (19:47), Desi Delforge (20:33), Ian Schwartzlow (20:36), Beckett Malaise (21:36), Collin Blum (22:17), Griffin Ness (23:25), Aiden Runkle (23:30), Ben Collins (23:39) and Dane Duerst (24:15) making sure that both the V and JV placed first. In fact, the boys nailed a team record low 18 points.
