New Glarus School Board Candidate - Muggenburg

March 25, 2021

Cari Ann Muggenburg

Age: 50

Occupation: Auditor for the Department of Public Instruction (DPI)

Years lived in the district: 20

Incumbent: No

Have you been on the school board or held any other public office before? If so please describe: No.

Why are you running for school board? I am running for the New Glarus School Board because I believe my 21 years of experience working with federal, state and community lawmakers I can assist in providing answers and support to a school district I love so dearly. As a parent and a community member, I want to be your voice. Please support me to be your voice for the New Glarus School Board.

What issues do you find most important to the school board? How would you handle these issues? Growth. New Glarus is a growing community and our School District needs to appropriately accommodate a growing student population, while retaining our small class sizes, so we can adapt to the increasingly changing society to ensure students are college and career ready. To do this I will work on implementing the long range facility planning while continuing to be fiscally responsible to the taxpayer.

Funding. I will also work to fix the disparities that exist in the state aid funding to recognize growth in rural schools. The April 6 ballot has 60 rural school districts, including New Glarus, seeking funding referendums from their community. Rural schools need to have equitable recognition in the state school funding formula in order to compete with larger school districts for the funding needed for facility management, technology and resources, and retention and recruitment of teachers.

Social justice. I will work to increase programming, experiences, and resources to empower students and educators to engage in learning how to create a more just and equitable society.

Mental Health. I will support programs that assist with the mental well-being of students and educators.

Any additional comments? The past 12 months were like none other we have seen, and hopefully will not see again. District Administrators, Teachers and Parents had to make decisions with little or no information. I intend to use what we learned in the last year and work with school staff and the community to advocate for the best interest of our children.
